9/56 YEAR CYCLE: TAIWANESE EARTHQUAKES 1900 TO 2004

Appendix for the paper 9/56 Year Cycles: Earthquakes & Volcanoes

The Central Weather Bureau of Taiwan (pers com) kindly provided the following listing of the 39 major Taiwanese earthquakes (mag => 7.0) occurring between 1900 and 2004. Interestingly, these quakes did not cluster into certain sections of the 9/56 year cycle with statistical significance (p always > .01) (see Table A). This clustering effect was clearly apparent in most other earthquake zones around the circum Pacific region. However, very few Taiwanese events took place in the 9/56 year cycle between the 56 year Sequences 46 to 29 (see Table B). In fact, only 7 quakes happened in the 24 sequences in this sector, where as about 17 would have been expected by coincidence (significant p < .01). Why there is a deficiency of major events in Table B probably has something to do with Moon Sun tidal cycles as discussed in 9/56 Year Cycles: Earthquakes & Volcanoes.

There is also a strong seasonal effect in major Taiwanese quakes as 20 occurred in the four months September to December, where as 9.8 could have been expected (significant p < .001).
